By-names for Dwarfs contains two tables with 100 terms each that can be combined to generate a by-name for a dwarf. Just roll a d100 on the first table, a d100 on the second table et viol and aacute;! - there are Axgrinder, Winterstone, Woolriddle, Oldword and Kingsong.
But that is not all: more than 60 terms are given an optional second meaning and/or connotation so that a by-name may also be a statement about the dwarf who carries it. A GM who needs a random dwarf-NPC thereby not only generates a name but also a possible background-bit about that dwarf.
Last but not least, 30 examples of by-names for dwarfs and their possible meaning are included as well.
Possible uses of a by-name:
Location-based by-names tell where a dwarf hails from or lives (Mountainhome; Northtrail; Winterkeep);
Profession-based by-names just say how a dwarf earns a living (Stonehewer, Coalminer; Gemcutter);
Honor-names tell about a great deed of the dwarf or praise a trait (Bladebreaker, Truesmith; Manyson; Sharpeye) ...or they are made to mock or shame the dwarf for it! (Goattongue)
Quest- or Grudge-names are taken up temporarily by a dwarf who is out to settle something ( Firebite, Thunderpath; Bloodwinter; Oathhand)
...and of course, the tables may be used to generate clan-names as well!
